Year 10 Maths in Australia: What Your Child Learns
16 May 2026
Year 10 is the final year of the Fโ10 curriculum and the launchpad for senior maths. Quadratics, more trigonometry and more advanced graphs prepare students for Years 11 and 12.
This guide explains what your child learns in Year 10 maths under the Australian Curriculum, the skills to watch for, and how it sets up senior maths.
What your child learns in Year 10
Australian maths is organised into six areas. Here is what each looks like in Year 10.
Number
Working with surds and index laws, and the real number system.
Algebra
Factorising and solving quadratic equations, solving simultaneous equations, and working with functions and graphs โ including parabolas and exponentials.
Measurement
Finding the surface area and volume of a range of solids, and applying trigonometry to practical problems.
Space
Using geometric proof and reasoning, including aspects of circle geometry.
Statistics
Investigating bivariate data, scatter plots and lines of best fit, and comparing data using measures of spread.
Probability
Working with conditional probability and independent events.
๐ก Parent tip: Year 10 is where students choose their Year 11โ12 maths. The harder Year 10 topics โ quadratics especially โ are a good guide to which pathway fits.

What is new compared to Year 9
| Year 9 | Year 10 |
|---|---|
| Factorise simple expressions | Factorise and solve quadratics |
| Simple non-linear relationships | Parabolas and exponential graphs |
| Pythagoras and basic trig | Trigonometry applied to problems |
| Scatter plots | Lines of best fit and spread |
Real-life maths in Year 10
- Projectile and growth models โ quadratics and exponentials.
- Trigonometry in surveying and navigation.
- Bivariate data and trends.
- Probability in risk, insurance and games.
Skills to look for by the end of Year 10
By the end of the year, most students can:
- Work with surds and index laws
- Factorise and solve quadratic equations
- Solve simultaneous equations
- Sketch parabolas and exponential graphs
- Apply trigonometry to practical problems
- Use conditional probability
Where Year 10 students often struggle
- Quadratics โ there are several methods, and choosing one is tricky.
- Surds โ a new kind of number to manipulate.
- The leap towards senior-level abstraction.
- Choosing the right senior pathway.
๐ก Parent tip: If your child enjoys and copes with Year 10 algebra, a methods/advanced pathway is realistic. If it is a real struggle, a standard/applied pathway is often the smarter, more successful choice.
How you can help at home
- Support steady revision habits.
- Discuss senior subject choices early โ with the school.
- Use worked examples and online practice.
- Keep the focus on understanding, not just answers.
Try a few Year 10 questions
- Factorise xยฒ + 5x + 6.
- Solve xยฒ = 49.
- Simplify โ50.
- Solve simultaneously: y = x + 1 and y = 2x.

Does this change by state?
Year 10 is the last year of the shared national curriculum. From Year 11, each state runs its own senior system โ so Year 10 is the natural point to plan ahead with your child's school.
Keep going
Year 10 closes the Fโ10 curriculum and sets the senior pathway. Quadratics are the topic to watch.
